A Valentine’s Day Tale of Two Trojans

Valentine’s is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than by sharing a love story that is near and dear to our hearts day.

It was Fall of 1986, and our esteemed Director of Admission, Kirk Brennan, was merely a mere freshman studying Cinema at USC. Kirk lived on the ‘Cinema Interest’ floor of this dorm, mostly inhabited by other film guys and only a few girls (in days past, the School of Cinematic Arts possessed a male bulk). Certainly one of those girls ended up being Julie- or ‘Bubbles’ as her friends affectionately called her because of her big, bubbly personality.

Kirk and Julie had one course together at USC- a Geography program. Kirk says certainly one of his favorite memories at USC involved this course: He stayed up so late working on his ‘480’ film project which he slept through the due date of the Geography that is big lab! He begged the TA to accept their homework that is late and his relief, she complied. Thankfully, Julie never heard about Kirk’s tardiness!

One time, Kirk and his friends decided it would be fun to have party that is screening and fortunately for them, Julie offered to host the party at her Dad’s house in Santa Monica. Julie, a cook that is excellent whipped up some fried chicken for the hungry teens, and in accordance with Kirk, that’s as he knew he had to ask her out: ‘When I saw her cooking that chicken, I thought she was pretty cute!’

A couple weeks later, on September 19th, 1986, Kirk invited Julie to a fraternity rush party, which may turned out to be known as their very first date. One date is all it took- Kirk and Julie ‘decided to go together’ after that evening, and six years later, Kirk got down on one leg and asked Julie become his wife.

And now for the proposal…

When Kirk’s friend told him that he was moving and wanted to truly have a goodbye party, Kirk saw a chance to ask friends and household over and pop music the question ‘under the guise of the house cooling party.’ Kirk rented a video camera from Blockbuster (apparently you could do that in the nineties) to make sure that the day would live in perpetuity. Too bad the Trojan Marching Band had beenn’t there to serenade!

Kirk asked Julie to marry him, and in they will celebrate two decades of marriage june. As Kirk says, ‘marriage ain’t easy, but it is worthwhile!’

Through the Trojan Family to yours, Happy Valentine’s Day!
